Hollywood is littered with some of the best film scripts written but never made. Now Ken Russell's Dracula screenplay joins the distinguished list of un-produced movie scripts with an insightful introduction by Paul Sutton. Sutton has done an exhaustive research job and the first volume of his Russell bio will soon be published in the U.S.A.
One of the things I'm finally coming to understand about Ken Russell is that for all his outrageous razzle dazzle he was a serious artist, perhaps more so than some of his peers with more exalted reputations. I've seen most of his films, but this is the first screenplay of Russell's that I've read and I'm impressed. I love Bram Stoker's novel and have always been frustrated at how far afield from it most film adaptations have gone, and I think Russell's makes the best use yet of his source material.
I WAS THE MOTION PICTURE PRODUCER WHO DEVELOPED THIS SCREENPLAY WITH KEN RUSSELL (A FRIEND, COLLEAGUE AND THE SUBJECT OF MY MASTER'S THESIS.) THE SCREENPLAY ITSELF IS FASCINATING, BUT THE SO-CALLED INTRODUCTION BY PAUL SUTTON IS LUDICROUSLY INACCURATE IN TERMS OF HISTORY, COMPARISONS AND CONCLUSIONS.
