The Kill The Forbidden Game Vol 3 LJ Smith 9780671874537 Books

Julian is playing one last game with Jenny and her friends. He has captured Tom and Zach trapped them in the Shadow World. It is up to Jenny, Dee, Audrey, and Michael to find them and bring them back. But, as they previously learned, Julian doesn't like to lose. What will Julian do if Jenny wins? Will he step aside and let everyone go home, or does he still have one more trick up his sleeve?

There is no doubt in my mind that this trilogy was inspired by Labyrinth. At lest a small part of it.

There are two things I can always count on an L.J. Smith book to have. A small amount of pages (250 or less) and male love-interests that will undoubtedly steal my heart.

L.J. Smith, you have managed to make me cry again. Why do you insist on breaking my heart? Why must you make me go through this a second time when I barely managed to get over the figurative blow to the gut you delivered at the end of The Power?

Plot-wise, this was exactly like the previous 2 books. Julian wants Jenny so he makes her play a game. If she wins she's free, if she loses, she's his forever. I liked the previous 2 books, but I felt stronger feelings towards this book because we finally get a conclusion.

This book isn't perfect, it's far from it, but I truly do like it.
The story was intriguing and entertaining. The ending was sad, yet satisfying. Ms. Smith is a master at writing teenage angst in a way that makes you identify with the characters.

A sad ending to a great trilogy!

The Kill The Forbidden Game Vol 3 LJ Smith 9780671874537 Books Reviews

The Kill is the third and final book in The Forbidden Game Trilogy and for me it was also the best one. In this book Jenny and her friends are once again faced against Julian's Games and nightmares for one final time, and they have to win in order to save Tom and Zach from the Shadow World. The Game this time is a Treasure Hunt and it takes place in an amusement park. That was by far the scariest setting, with so many creepy possibilities.

I loved that in the final book we got to see a side of Julian that we haven't seen so far. It made me love him even more. My heart was broken in tiny little pieces by the end of this book. I also once again loved Jenny, she has grown so much through the books and she has become the perfect main character. I'd love to read more of her story (and Julian's) but unfortunately the trilogy has come to an end.

I am really glad that even after all the years that these books have been collecting dust on my shelves, I finally picked them up. Oh, and another thing I love about them, the 90s! I am a 90s kid so it was pretty awesome to relive in that time period. I miss the 90s... Anyways, this was a great series, really creepy and with great characters.
I really hate the ‘make her his bride’ part. Because it’s less about that now and I think Julian just wants to finally win a game against Jenny. Odds aren’t in his favor here since she’s got two out of three, but points for perseverance.

THE KILL is probably my favorite book out of the whole series. I thought it was the best written, had the most heart, the best character development, and it was certainly the creepiest. An amusement park of nightmares? Yes, please. You had me at amusement park.

I like THE KILL because the characters have real consequences for their actions. People aren’t unscathed as they go through all of this. There are repercussions to things. They’re not just coasting through, trying to hit certain tasks and getting out of tight spots through a series of conveniences. For how unrealistic the story it, this only works to ground it more in reality.

The setting is killer. I love me a good creepy amusement park. I think they’re sinister anyway but to have this mock up of one in the Shadow World is just perfect. I especially liked the museum arcade with all the really old arcade games with creepy clowns and dolls in them that made all these weird clanking, grinding sounds when you used them. There’s a place in San Francisco that it reminded me of, Musee Mecanique, that’s also a penny arcade that doubles as a museum with really creepy dolls that repel and fascinating at the same time.

Jenny’s morphed into total BAMF territory and is so fed up with Julian’s crap that she just barrels through this world with only thoughts of Tom and Zach driving her. She stands firmly on her own two feet and I love how it’s the woman rescuing the men. Michael is actually the only man in the rescue party and he’s effectively worthless (still). So it’s Jenny, leading a charge of angry women into Julian’s world to take back what’s theirs. And Smith’s othering of Dee has been brought back down to a minimum. It’s still there but nowhere near as pervasive and cringe-worthy as it was in the last book.

My recap will be going up on 11/23 over at The Devil’s Elbow so be sure to check that out when it posts! The Forbidden Game is an excellent series that I think with just some small tweaks would stand up in today’s market. It’s creepy and empowering and unlike many series it actually gets better as it progresses. Love that.

4.5
